Pressuring someone with Selective Mutism to speak increases their anxiety and will therefore not work.

A safe, comfortable and supportive environment is key. Remove any pressure or expectations surrounding speech, while also supporting them to make progress in a systematic way.

Autism and Selective Mutism is an important topic to talk about as there are many misconceptions surrounding the two. Some may believe that Selective Mutism is a form of autism. However, that is not the case. ASD and SM are two different disorders. They can coexist together, but SM is not a form, or symptom of autism.

Maybe you have been told though that the two can’t coexist. That is wrong. A person can absolutely have both. ASD is in fact one of the most common comorbidities with SM.

In this post I explain the difference between the two as well as answer some of the misconceptions.
